![]() ![]() What Level Editor and Game Engine Should You Use - (How to Choose) Make sure to check out all the tutorials within this series listed below:Ģ3 Recommended and Available 3D Game Engines Game engines will provide you with the framework that game designers use to create games. If you ever wanted to take your skill further into game development and game design, you will need to begin exploring the world of game engines. Update #1 (December 12, 2012): Originally published and featured a list of 15 game engines. Update #2 (April 27, 2015): This post was been updated with one new additional game engine, updated links and information that was outdated. The overall situation is similar on OSX.Update #3 (July 28, 2016): This post has been completely updated with 7 new, additional game engines, updated links and information that was outdated. I don't know if they already have published games for linux, but they definitely have for OSX. Ubisoft has also released a statement saying they are devising a "game plan for linux" going forwards, whatever that means. Microsoft has also published games for linux (at least two that I know of.) EA publishes games through the ubuntu software center. CD Projekt Red, firaxis, VALVE, deep silver, 2K games et al publish on both linux and OSX. EA and ubisoft are all over android and iOS. So you can draw a 1:1 conclusion if you want to, but it'd lose you a lot of money :) You definitely want to research and understand each of the markets you are going to target, at least superficially.Īlso, if you think the big companies don't make games for mobile platforms, linux, OSX et al, you have not kept yourself up-to-date with releases in the past two years or so. Linux and OSX users OTOH are willing to pay up to twice as much for the same product, because the market is not as saturated. Android may have 1.5 times the users iOS or windows has, but drawing a 1:1 conclusion that you will be able to gain 1.5 the amount of revenue would be a bad idea, because android users are not willing to pay as much as windows users. I'm saying it's not fair because it is too crude of an approximation to use to make good business decisions. ![]() It is a needless handicap when there are so many other engines available which do support other targets out of the box. Using a Windows only engine is foolish if you want to make games commercially. There will always be games which play better with touch, mouse, or gamepads. If your game can control with mouse for example is in your commercial interest to have that possible because it directly converts to commercial viability, and if your game can be played with a mouse then it can be played with a gamepad or touch. On Windows, it's in your interest to have as simple of controls as possible. If you are making a AAA PC first super amazing 3D game I can understand targeting Windows first, but locking yourself out of the ease of targeting more platforms later on with what engine you use is foolish. Win, Mac, Linux, console, mobile all should be supported if possible. It is in your interest as a commercial developer to consider all possible targets and platforms. ![]()
